Shelf Index

Last updated: 2 November 2026

Who we are

Shelf Index is an app for cataloguing collections — films, board games, video games, books, music and anything else you keep on a shelf — and finding where each thing lives. It is developed and maintained by Porkenpence Limited, a company registered in England and Wales (Company No. 16820657), based in Chester, Cheshire, UK. We are registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) under registration number CSN2429996.

The short version

Your collections are stored on your phone, and in your own Google Drive if you turn on Drive backup. There are no Shelf Index accounts, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking. Nothing leaves your phone unless you choose to send it: Google Drive backup, the optional Claude features using your own Anthropic API key, or sharing a backup or spreadsheet yourself. None of it passes through a server of ours — we don't have one for this app.

What is stored, and where

Everything you add — titles, details, barcodes, notes, your lists, shelf settings and the photos you take — is kept in the app's private storage on your device. We cannot see it. Uninstalling the app deletes it, so keep a backup (Settings → Back up everything).

Optional Google Drive backup

If you turn on Back up to Google Drive, you sign in with your Google account and the app copies your collections (records and photos) into a folder called "Shelf Index" in your own Google Drive, keeping it up to date as you make changes. It uses Google's drive.file permission, so the app can see only the files it created there, not anything else in your Drive. Your backup is stored by Google under Google's privacy policy. Your Google account's email address is shown in Settings and stays on your phone.

Disconnecting stops further backups; what is already in your Drive stays there until you delete the "Shelf Index" folder.

Optional Claude features

If you enter your own Anthropic API key in Settings, the app sends the following directly from your phone to Anthropic's API (api.anthropic.com), over an encrypted connection:

  • each photo you take while adding something, so Claude can read its title, details and barcode and find the edges of the box or case; and
  • the titles (and format, edition and barcode, where known) of items you ask it to fill in.

This goes to your own Anthropic account, under Anthropic's privacy policy. It does not pass through any server of ours. Your API key is stored in your phone's encrypted keystore and is only ever sent to Anthropic. Without a key, nothing is sent anywhere.

Camera and photos

The app uses the camera to photograph boxes and cases and to scan barcodes, and can read photos you choose from your gallery. Barcodes are read on the device.

Backups and exports

When you back up or export, the app creates a file and hands it to Android's share sheet. Where it goes after that is your choice.

Third parties

The app contains no analytics tools, advertising networks or tracking of any kind. The only services it talks to are the two above, and only when you turn them on: Google Drive and Anthropic.

Children

Shelf Index is not directed at children under 13.
